When the main subject of a photo essay is most active in an environment not welcoming to cameras - such as a courtroom - it presents a great challenge for the photographer. But while it is challenging, it is not defeating.

This photo essay is a visual introduction into the environment and daily routines of the Cook County public defender's office and the Cook County state's attorney's office - a look into their jobs outside the courtroom.

Although both support opposing sides on a daily basis, there seems to exist more similarities than differences when it comes to the foundation that makes both offices successful: teamwork, dedication and a strong desire to help others.

This photo essay is the first installment in a yearlong series that will look at both offices and what drives the lawyers there to do what they do on a daily basis.
