Litigation boutique Schopf & Weiss will combine with Detroit’s largest law firm, Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn.

Honors

The American Bar Association Commission on Women in the Profession has selected five female lawyers to receive its 2015 Margaret Brent Women Lawyers of Achievement Award on Aug. 2. They are Mari Carmen Aponte, ambassador of the United States to El Salvador; Flora D. Darpino, lieutenant general, Army, Judge Advocate General; Fernande R.V. Duffly, associate justice, Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court; Mary Ann Hynes, senior counsel, Dentons US LLP in Chicago and formerly senior vice president and general counsel at Ingredion; and Emma Coleman Jordan, professor of law, Georgetown University Law Center.

The Chicago Bar Association’s Alliance for Women honored two lawyers for their contributions to the progress of women in the law at its annual awards luncheon on May 22. Stephanie A. Scharf, corporate, of Scharf Banks Marmor received the Founder’s Award. Megan M. Mathias, business and litigation, of Lopp Mathias Law Group received the Alta May Hulett Award.

The recipients of the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association William J. Harte Amicus Volunteer Award — which recognizes individuals for their dedicated volunteer service and professional efforts on behalf of the ITLA Amicus Curiae Committee in preparing legal briefs before the Illinois Supreme and Appellate Courts during the past 12 months — are: F. Michael Alkaraki, an associate at Leahy & Hoste; Deidre Baumann, a partner at Baumann & Shuldiner; Patrick E. Dwyer III of the Law Offices of Patrick E. Dwyer III; Peter C. The Indian American Bar Association of Chicago Foundation awarded the 2015 IABA Foundation Public Interest Fellowship to Manpreet Teji, a second-year student at The John Marshall Law School. This summer, Teji will be working for the Federal Defender Program in the Northern District of Illinois, where she will assist staff attorneys representing indigent clients.

The John Marshall Law School Alumni Association presented its Distinguished Service Awards to: Cook County Circuit Judge Thomas W. Murphy, supervising judge of the Civil Division of the 5th Municipal District in Bridgeview; Associate Judge Dinah Lennon Archambeault; Assistant State’s Attorney and Deputy Supervisor George Louis Canellis Jr.; Michael Paul Cogan, co-founder of Cogan & Power; and John Marshall Law School assistant professor Mary T. Nagel.

Katten Muchin Rosenman received the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence’s Richard W. Odgers Pro Bono Award on behalf of the firm for outstanding work in reducing gun violence on June 18 in San Francisco at the group’s 22nd anniversary dinner.

Andrew Martin Mayer Koppelman, John Paul Stevens Professor of Law at the Northwestern University School of Law and professor of political science in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, has been named the 14th recipient of the Martin E. and Gertrude G. Walder Award for Research Excellence.

Keefe & Keefe attorney Thomas Q. Keefe Jr. was awarded the Leonard M. Ring Lifetime Achievement Award at the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association convention on June 5 in Oak Brook.

Manuel Sanchez, a partner at Sanchez Daniels & Hoffman, was named a Father of the Year by the Chicago Father’s Day Council and the American Diabetes Association.

Schiff Hardin partner Edward M. Casmere received an Award for Excellence in Pro Bono Service from the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.

The Veterans Treatment and Assistance Court Mentoring Program of the 19th Judicial Circuit in Lake County has been recognized with an achievement award from the National Association of Counties. The award will be presented at its annual conference in Mecklenburg County, N.C., this month.

The Women’s Bar Association of Illinois honored Kirkland & Ellis partner Linda K. Myers with a Women of Achievement award at its annual installation dinner on June 4.

Appointments

Drinker Biddle Reath partner Douglas B. Swill was appointed to the board of directors of Center for Healthcare Innovation, a national, independent, nonprofit research and educational institute that helps patients and providers in understanding the opportunities and challenges of maximizing health-care value to improve health and quality of life. He will serve a three-year term.

Several Fitch Even Tabin & Flannery attorneys were named to leadership positions in the Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago for 2015–16: associate Alisa C. Simmons, trademarks; partner Joseph T. Nabor, chair of IPLAC’s Historical Records Committee; partner Jeffrey A. Chelstrom, chair of the U.S. Patents Committee; and partner Joseph E. Shipley, IPLAC’s delegate to the U.S. Bar-EPO Liaison Council and as vice chair of the International Patent Committee.

The Illinois Supreme Court appointed attorney James R. Figliulo chair of the Supreme Court Rules Committee for a term expiring Dec. 31, 2016, and Will County Circuit Judge John C. Anderson as vice chairperson of the Supreme Court Rules Committee expiring Dec. 31, 2016.

R. Mark McCareins, clinical professor at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, was named vice chairman of the antitrust committee of The Chicago Bar Association for 2015-2016.

IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law professor Daniel T. Coyne, who co-administers the criminal defense litigation clinic at the school, has been appointed by the Chicago City Council to evaluate new claims in the Burge Reparation Ordinance.

Ropes & Gray intellectual property litigation associate Janice V. Jabido was elected secretary of the Asian American Bar Association of Chicago for 2015–2016. Ropes & Gray private equity transactions associate Jeffrey J. H. Koh was re-elected to the group’s board of directors.

Mayer Brown litigation and dispute resolution partner Lori E. Lightfoot has been appointed as the next chair of the Chicago Police Board by Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

Courts

The 16th Judicial Circuit judges have appointed Divya Kamal Sarang as an associate judge. She was selected from a field of 27 candidates.

U.S. District Judge James F. Holderman, Northern District of Illinois, retired on June 1. He joined JAMS and will work as an arbitrator and mediator.

Law schools

Northwestern University School of Law received a $1 million donation from Chris and Courtney Combe to combat female genital mutilation. It will pay for two public health fellowships and support the university’s program in Mali led by law professor Juliet Sorensen.
